Install the Blinds
Before shortening the blinds, they need to be installed to get the most accurate measurement. Follow the instructions that came with the blinds if they aren’t already installed. Once hung, extend the blinds down as far as possible.
Determine the Proper Length
Once the blinds are installed, decide where you want them to end. Carefully consider the length before cutting to avoid making them too short, which could ruin them and prevent them from blocking light properly at the bottom of the window. Choose a slat that will be the new bottom slat, usually the one that hits right at the windowsill, or slightly below for extra length. Mark this slat with a sticky note or painter’s tape.
Remove Excess Length
Take out all slats that fall below the new lowest slat, maneuvering them to slide out of the cords with notches in the slats that keep them in place. Cut all horizontal cord supports below the new bottom slat with sharp scissors. Do not cut any vertical cords yet. Cut the inner vertical cords about 3 inches below the new bottom slat, being careful not to cut the outer vertical cords, and do the same for all three of the vertical ladder cords that support the slats, leaving the outer cords intact on all three.
Secure the Slats
Push up the bottom rail until it reaches the new bottom slat. Pry off the plastic buttons on the bottom side of the rail with a flathead screwdriver to create leverage. Push the excess cord length into the button holes and push the buttons back in place. For Levolor window treatments with a bottom rail with end caps and a rail along the bottom edge, remove the rail to open the bottom edge and complete the same steps.
To replace the vertical ladder cords on these blinds, first pull them down through the bottom rail. Take note of the metal eyelets on the cords that must be removed before cutting them about 4 inches below the rail. When you receive your new blinds, check for replacement eyelets in the parts bag. Thread them onto the ladder cords and slide them up until they reach the inside of the bottom rail. Use pliers to crimp them and cut the cords 2 inches below the eyelets. Tuck the cords inside the rail, put the bottom slat back in place, and reattach the end caps.
